As we reach the end of another busy season, Charlestown Harbour is preparing for its usual winter routine. From 1st November, the inner harbour and harbourside pop-ups will close as part of our regular seasonal schedule. This quieter period allows the team to focus on maintenance, ongoing project work, and preparations for the festive season ahead.

The installation of the new lock gate continues to progress carefully and methodically. As part of ongoing preparations, the project team will be making further adjustments to the gate structure on site this week.

Following last week’s wind and tidal conditions, engineers are taking the opportunity to reset and strengthen the timber supports on the pontoon, ensuring the gate remains perfectly aligned and secure ahead of installation. This involves temporarily returning the middle section of the gate to land for fine-tuning and the fitting of precision shims.

These steps are part of the normal process for a project of this scale, making sure everything is balanced and ready for a safe, successful lift when conditions and tides are right.

Constructex and the harbour team continue to work towards the next suitable Spring tide window, which occurs roughly every two weeks and provides the higher water levels needed to float and position the gate safely. Timing on those specific tides must also align with calm weather and low wind to allow the lift to proceed.

Once in place, the new gate will allow the inner harbour to remain full of water year-round, including over Christmas – so visitors can enjoy Charlestown at its best throughout the festive period.

The overall timeline remains on course for full reopening in April 2026, when this major restoration will be celebrated with a public event marking a new chapter in Charlestown’s story.

A Harbour Full of Christmas Cheer

Before winter truly sets in, Charlestown Harbour will come alive with festive spirit for our Christmas Markets, taking place on 6–7 December and 20–21 December from 10am–4pm.

Expect local food and drink, artisan makers, live music, and a visit to Santa’s Grotto, all set against the beautiful backdrop of a harbour brimming with water and festive lights.

Looking Ahead

While the colder months bring a natural pause to the visitor season, there’s still plenty happening behind the scenes. We’re looking forward to seeing the new lock gate in place in the coming weeks – a key moment that will restore the harbour’s iconic look and ensure it remains a thriving, working port for generations to come.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we move steadily towards a fully restored and vibrant Charlestown Harbour.
