LOCK GATE REGENERATION UPDATE: A Big Step Forward
It’s been a little while since our last update, and we know many of you have been eager to hear how the Lock Gate Project is progressing. We’re pleased to say that some major milestones have been reached this summer, marking an important step towards securing Charlestown Harbour for the future.
Earlier in the season, the old lock gate was lifted out in a complex three-day operation. This was no small task, and we’re hugely grateful to the skilled teams who carried it out. While the gate has now gone for recycling, we’ve kept some key parts, which will soon form the basis of new heritage displays so its history can remain part of Charlestown’s story.
The designs for the new lock gate, sheave and winch are now complete. As part of the preparation, core drilling was carried out on either side of the lock chamber. This revealed the need for additional testing, extensions and replacement parts — extra steps which have added time and cost, but which are vital to ensure the long-term strength and success of the new installation.
Whilst work continues off site every single day, work on site is very much tide-led. Access to the lock is only possible for 4–5 days in every 14–18 day cycle. This naturally slows visible progress, but it is the reality of working in such a historic and tidal harbour. We are hopeful that the new gate will be in position by the end of October, but as always, we remain in the hands of the weather and tides.
As with any project of this scale, there have been challenges, but thanks to the commitment of our contractors, Beckett Rankine and Constructing Excellence South West, steady progress is being made. Over 65% of the workforce involved so far has been local, with many Cornish businesses playing a central role, including: Mike Davies Fabrication Limited, CS Marine, Wilson & Daughter, Rob Oliver Plant Hire, Pump Supplies Limited, Euroflo, DJ Wills Haulier, Macsalvors (Plant Hire) Limited, Paul Mitchell Sacks Limited, 1st Call Skip Hire, Plymcrete, and Pinetum Gardens (Accommodation).
We’d also like to thank our community for your patience and support. During Regatta Week, we made sure the site was clear so the harbour could once again take centre stage. Seeing Charlestown come alive with celebrations was a timely reminder of why this project matters.
There’s still work ahead, but the finish line is coming into view. The new lock gate will be a transformative moment for Charlestown Harbour — protecting its heritage, supporting its future, and celebrating the spirit of this remarkable place. We’ll continue to share updates as the project moves forward.
