Update on Charlestown Harbour Storm Damage and Vessel Movements, 10th October 2024
We are pleased to report that contractors from Teignmouth Maritime Services (TMS) are now on site and will begin work to safely lower the damaged lock gate. This will allow the vessels currently in the harbour to leave without further risk to the gate or the vessels themselves.
Following the successful lowering of the gate, TMS will prepare to lift it out for further repairs. While we do not have an exact timeline for this next phase, we can confirm that TMS will also be installing a wave attenuation solution. This important measure will help protect the harbour from future storm damage while the lock gate is restored.
We have been working closely with the vessel owners to ensure they have suitable moorings for the duration of these repairs. Many of the vessels are headed to Fowey, and we are providing support vessels to assist with their onward journey. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Fowey Harbour and the vessel owners for their cooperation and understanding during this period, as well as to TMS for their rapid and professional response.
For those asking about the tall ship Kajsamoor, we had an emergency situation where the vessel took on water after her pump failed. To prevent further damage, we deployed emergency pumps but intentionally left some water onboard to keep nearly all contaminants contained. Unfortunately, a very small amount did enter the water, so as soon it was safe to board the vessel the emergency spill kit was deployed. Pumping her out was necessary to avoid a greater risk of a hull plank breaking, which could have released far more contaminants into the water. The relevant authorities have been consulted on this matter and are satisfied with the situation as it stands. We are pleased to report that the vessel was safely afloat again within hours. The vessel, which has faced ongoing challenges due to her age and construction, continues to require careful monitoring and management. We remain committed to ensuring her safety for the time being and will keep the public informed as we evaluate her long-term needs.
We’d also like to take this moment to thank the public for their incredible support and understanding during this difficult time. Our sincere thanks also go to our dedicated team, particularly Harbour Master Mat Chapman, who have been working tirelessly, often through the night, to manage the situation and keep the harbour safe. Their hard work and commitment have been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for their efforts.
We will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.
